Radio: Jazz With an Accent on 88.9 FM WDNA, Miami

radioA nine one-hour program series exploring jazz around the world produced and hosted by Fernando González for 88.9 FM WDNA Miami.
Jazz, the quintessential American art form, has become a global language that many artists around the world are using to tell their stories. The thematic shows focused on specific styles and approaches in contemporary jazz — such as  Electric Fusion; the new Big Bands;  the Avant-Garde, which was titled “Postcards From The Edge,” but also jazz Standards re-imagined and, well, with an accent.

The groups and artists featured included vocalists Claudia AcuñaHuong Thranh, with guitarist Nguyen Le; large ensembles such as the Vienna Art Orchestra, Loose Tubes, Banda Mantiqueira; leading European players such as Enrico Rava and Jan Garbarek; and explorers reporting from the outer edges, such as Joachim Kuhn and Rabih Abou-Khalil. We also heard musicians from around the world interpreting music from the Great Latin American Songbook — Bobo Stenson “Alfonsina y el Mar,”  Bill Evans “Esta Tarde Vi Llover,” or, flipping the script, the Paris-based  trio Mosalini-Beytelman- Caratini reimagining Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus” as avant-tango.
